The help of various array configurations, feeding methods, ays are used to scan the beam of an antenna system, to increase the directivity, gain and enhance various other functions which would be difficult with single element antenna. In the microstrip array, elements can be fed by a single line. The unique property of the microstrip patch antenna is its two-dimensional structure. As a flat antenna, arrays can have a large aperture, with corresponding high gain, but having low volume and weight. As noted above, curved implementa-tions can be made to conform to aircraft hulls. The dielectric layer can be manipulated to fit different. The net effect of an array of identical antennas is to modify the single-antenna radiation vector by the array factor, which incorporates all the translational phase shifts and relative weighting coefficients of the array elements. We may think of Eq. (22.3.1) as the input/output equation of a linear system with A(k)as the transfer function. Figure 4: Patch Antenna Array in use for Wi-Fi communications Refer to Appendix A for the single patch antenna design procedure. Patch Antenna Array In order to increase main beam gain, reduce side lobe radiation, and increase directivity, the patch antenna design was expanded to a four element array. The design layout is shown in Figure 5.
